Darkness has been fundamental to creating art for all of history, from cave paintings to the renaissance era, avant-garde of the 20th century, and now in contemporary format.
The night toys with our reasoning, doubting our limited vision and questioning what lurks in the shadows. Alertness is at its peak and all rational thought can quickly dissolve amongst the doubt of what we cannot see. The collection, LLE’s sixth and longest to date, features the works of 24 artists.
Only two pieces have currently been released at time of writing, both oil portraits, but of distinctly contrasting style. Casper White’s It Just Feels Gross adopts his usual techniques, but the clarity of the subject is reduced and the colours used are distinctly darker and more garish, fitting of the criteria LLE set out. Lindsey Bull’s Somewhere Over The Rainbow shies away from her more eccentric depictions of people. Gone are the unusual clothing and headgear from her Undergrowth collection last year, as are the bright flashes of colour, replaced by sombre and earthy shades of a girl with a hidden face.
