LA LUZ
News Of The Universe (Sub Pop)
Riffy basslines, keyboard electronics and angelic vocals are the order of the day from Californian group La Luz. Witness a song like Strange World, which enters with a punchy bass and exudes standalone, indie-rock swagger.

Non-lexical vocals are plentiful on News Of The Universe, with la’s and ba’s providing toe-tapping rhythm alongside the often understated and hip delivery of frontwoman Shana Cleveland while the bass enables shifts from gentle to an upbeat tempo. Album opener Reaching Up To The Sun showcases some of the most sumptuous harmonizing I’ve come across, while Moon In Reverse includes a riff you could imagine singing – go and listen for yourself!
When Dandelions reels off the lyrics, “I have missed the long sweet days of nothing much to do-oooh,” the emphasis on that oooh allows Cleveland to exhibit the dulcet sounds that are synonymous with La Luz as a band.
