JUSTINE ALLISON: SHIFTING LINES
Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre, Cwmbran
Until Sat 19 Jan
Shifting Lines is part of a touring exhibition, Language Of Clay, which aims to display the art of three unique artists in each part, with part one having ran from 2015-2017. Part two returned in January; this December it arrives at Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre.
Originally from London, Justine Allison draws inspiration from both city life and the rural environment of west Wales where she now resides. She works with porcelain and manipulates it by hand to give her work a delicate feel; occasional splashes of gold are added into soft and subtle shades of grey, black and white. Her works aim to be functional while being presented in a pleasing form: “I look at objects that are used on a daily basis, like the form of a jug, and create pieces that move away from function and are more concerned with the aesthetic and the visual.”
Additionally, Allison is curious about the transforming effect of light on the physical properties of porcelain and takes into consideration how light will influence her pieces, so much so that she has her workbench set up opposite a window to maximise the effect. Her work is often adorned with precise, strong lines, hence the title.
