JOE GODDARD
Harmonics (Domino)
During the 1990s, Hot Chip stalwart Joe Goddard could be found at an eclectic selection of London club nights, from Metalheadz to That’s How It Is at Bar Rumba to Basement Jaxx packing out various dingy Brixton venues. The resulting inquisitiveness and lack of snobbery when it comes to digging different dance genres has bled into his third solo album Harmonics, which mixes up smooth Chicago house, Brian Eno-style ambience and Detroit techno grit.
Prime picks from its 14 tracks include house stomper Summon, floor-filling anthem Destiny with singer Findia and UK rapper Oranje on the East Coast hip-hop styled When Love’s Out Of Fashion – while sublime electropop beauty On My Mind finds Joe Goddard hooking up with his Hot Chip comrades. Harmonics might have as many sophisticated bangers than an artisan sausage outlet, but a recurrent theme of longing for human unity underlines its songs.
