HABITATS #2
Grand Theatre, Swansea
Until Sat 27 Oct
Inspired by Frank Brangwyn’s British Empire Panels in Swansea, six artists have created a series of large artworks in response to the narratives of war, peacetime unity and harmony. Elysium Gallery presents work from Philip Cheater, Kathryn Anne-Trussler, Amy Goldring, Sophie Kumar-Taylor, Tom Morris, and Ann Jordan; their new works will be accompanied by a series of etchings, lithographs and prints by Brangwyn, combining past and present interpretations of post-war Empire. Habitats #2 follows on from Habitats #1, which features smaller works by the same artists and is on display at the National Botanic Gardens in Carmarthenshire until Tue 13 Nov.
One of the artists, Goldring, is a contemporary painter based in Swansea. Her paintings use bright colour to show abstract shapes influenced by natural forms. Likewise, Kumar-Taylor explores geometry, optical illusion, and distortion, experimenting with abstraction and colour relationships. Brangwyn’s panels, the inspiration for these pieces, are full of colour and decorative detail and depicting the riches of Great Britain and the Empire. The new work from the six artists are in response to Brangwyn’s portrayal of post-war Britain and are immersed in various scenery and habitats, using their own mediums to create something new.
