GWAR
The New Dark Ages (Pit)
Like Kiss’ uglier, more perverted little cousins, the self-proclaimed “Scumdogs Of The Universe” GWAR are back, and with latest album The New Dark Ages they’ve seen the future. With no shortage of confidence, frontman The Berserker Blóthar tells us: “This is the greatest rock record of all time. These are the songs for a new age, a New Dark Age, when men live by the dimming light of technology destined to betray them.”
The New Dark Ages – their second album without their last original member, late frontman Dave ‘Oderus Urungus’ Brockie – carries on their hybrid of traditional heavy metal, thrash metal and punk rock and is not the throwaway album that the cartoon imagery might have you believe it is. There are some genuinely awesome moments on here, as with most GWAR albums.
The concept of the album will also play out in a graphic novel tie in called GWAR In The Duoverse of Absurdity, in which the band are sucked off into an alternate universe to do battle with their evil twins and the spectre of rogue technology. To say the band have matured is a bit of a push, but if you are a fan of good crossover, then there’s plenty to be enjoyed here.
