GREYWALL | ONES TO WATCH

Cardiff’s latest metalcore hopes are this four-piece, who have just dropped an almighty chunk of riffage with their new single Just Another Love Story, which musically at least is anything but. Chris Andrews caught up with lead vocalist Leighton Piper.

Tell us a little bit about Greywall and where the name came from…

Currently we have four members and are auditioning drummers. There is Ryan Evans on lead guitar, Barrian Prince on rhythm guitar/vocals and Shaun Culleton on bass. The name Greywall represents those who are in between and forgotten about, coming together to be strong.

To these ears at least, you have a sound rooted somewhere in the early-00s metalcore explosion, with heavy riffs complimented by the clean/roared vocal attack. Bands like Killswitch Engage for instance.

Although we have a variety of musical influences from the metal world such as Slayer, As I Lay Dying, Tool, Bleed From Within and Metallica, I would say our main influence would be Trivium.

To date what has been your favourite live experience?

Easily our best gig so far was our very first gig. We were fortunate to be given the opportunity to play with some well know local bands. As the ‘new band’, we opened the show to a packed audience, thinking that they were there for the main event. But we went down a storm and at least half the audience left after our set.

What does the future hold for Greywall and has the pandemic had an impact on any of it?

We have just released our first single Just Another Love Story, which has gained some airplay on Kerrang! and Total Rock, and we are currently recording our debut album with Jason Norman. We were supposed to go on tour with Cranial Separation but had to cancel it due to COVID. There will be a new video and a few more tracks prior to the album release, and then hopefully tours with some incredible bands.
