Empirical is a project involving four young British jazz musicians with a manifesto of performing varied and unique compositions and improvisations. Originally formed in 2007, and in their current guise since 2008, they have already gained a strong reputation amongst the most elite jazz circles for their uncompromising and distinctive musical style – something very much evident in their live shows. “Our aim is to incite a reaction in our audience, be it emotional, cerebral or physical!” explains bassist Tom Farmer. “Our music is not flippant or throwaway, it’s dynamic and carefully considered. The shows are chapters in our story.”
Empirical followed winning the best jazz act at 2010’s MOBO Awards with the inclusion of Elements Of Truth on Metro’s Albums Of 2011 list, something which goes a long way towards thrusting them into the popular music spotlight. “Obviously [being included] felt great,” continues Farmer. “Any media coverage that puts Empirical alongside mainstream music, and therefore modern British creative music, is invaluable.”
Always keen to incorporate special guests into their music, Elements Of Truth saw the inclusion of long-time collaborator George Fogel on piano in an attempt to expand the sound and range of the ensemble, something which Farmer feels helped the quartet to achieve a more expansive sound; “His contribution really developed the sound of the record and the ensemble. We try to have guests on our shows sometimes to add new thinking to the mix. Our sound is a reflection of the times we live in. It changes every year as the music develops.” The current release received widespread critical acclaim, being described by the Guardian as “fascinating and fearless” and simply “terrific” by the Telegraph, whilst the BBC boldly stated that it “crashes irresistibly through the decades”.
So why exactly should someone attend an Empirical live show? “The same reason why many people don’t!” Farmer exclaims. “It’s a challenging, thought provoking journey. It’s a reflection of our times. It’s a step towards truth.” Tickets: £12/£10. Info: 029 2034 2854 / www.rwcmd.ac.uk JIM SWIDENBANK
