The festive season officially kicks off the moment panto invitations start rolling in. Cue the promise of silliness, cheeky innuendos, and heaps of giggles – and, as always, Newport’s Riverfront is first on the calendar, setting the bar high with a mix of community spirit and heartwarming tradition. With discounted tickets for local schools and OAPs, it’s a theatre that knows how to bring everyone together.
Dick Whittington was this year’s offering, a story that blends history with fantasy. The tale is loosely based on the real-life Richard Whittington, a 14th-century figure who moved to London, married, and became Lord Mayor three times. But let’s be real: the panto’s magic lies in its sea voyages, villainous rats, loyal cats, and all the fabulous twists that have thrilled audiences since its first performance in 1814.

This Welsh spin on the classic comes from the minds of producer Jamie Anderson and director/writer Richard Gauntlett. They’ve woven a tale where Dick, played with charm and wit by Johnathon Houlson, sets out on a quest for gold and glory, accompanied by his ever-faithful cat, played by Newport favourite Richard Elis. But of course, no adventure is complete without a little chaos. Enter Queen Rat – a devious yet utterly delightful villain, brought to life by Elian West.

Along the way, Dick befriends the lovable Alys (Mia Jae) and gets a helping hand from the hilariously whimsical Fairy Daffodil (Chloe Jo Byrnes). And let’s not forget Gareth Tempest, whose turn as the larger-than-life Sarah the Cook had kids squealing with laughter and adults grinning ear to ear. From slapstick to sharp one-liners, the humour is spot-on for all ages.

The entire cast radiates energy, delivering joke after joke and madcap musical numbers with gusto. Add to that a dazzling set and vibrant costumes, and you’ve got a visual feast. Behind the scenes, the creative team’s stage set and costumes are brilliant. While the budgets might not rival those of larger, more lavish venues, the end result is pure magic. They’ve crafted a world where, for a couple of hours, kids and grown-ups alike can escape, laugh, and soak in the festive joy we all crave.
