Elysium Gallery, Swansea
Fri 6 May-Sat 4 June
The name Dalit means ‘to draw water’ in Hebrew, so it’s apt that water features abundantly in Dalit Leon’s art. Other elements such as earth and air (sky) also feature quite prominently, along with the moon and sun. Her work can be epic but intimate and dream-like, too.
The Israeli-born Leon says her adopted home certainly has been an influence on her art. “Living in Wales has made an impact on my sense of landscape and the elements-the tides, the rain and the clouds, the wind and changing seasons are at a constant state of tangible movement and change.”
At this presentation, she’s branching out with a tactile show. No etchings but there will be oil paintings and work involving the processes of spinning and also felting, which is the technique of shrinking and bonding together of animal fibres such as wool, through heat, agitation and moisture.
The felted 2D pieces will include bits of plants and the 3D ones will be mainly wool and crochet. Leon will be on hand discussing her practice and the exhibition on Sat 4 June at 2pm.
She adds, “This body of work continues to explore relationship between the material, perceptual and spiritual world as One; the idea of the passage of time concurrent with the timeless-the signatures of essence and those of transformation.”
