Groove Theory @ Undertone, Cardiff
Fri 6 Apr
Since launching in 2013, Groove Theory has become Cardiff’s go-to name for the more discerning end of house and disco, welcoming a bevy of headsy selectors to grace the decks, usually at Undertone and occasionally in conjunction with fellow 4/4 party starters Rotary Club and Blue Honey. This instalment’s guest, Red Greg, has been collecting records and playing them in a club context since 1985 – probably well before a fair few of the evening’s attendees were born. Working a part-time schedule alongside ‘proper’ work, he tends to play just three or four sets a month, so it’s something of a coup for the Groove Theory team to secure his services for an evening.
A cratedigger of renown, he’s amassed a staggering collection of obscure soul, disco and boogie records over 30 plus years of sniffing around dusty old record shops, and it shows – his mixes for Dekmantel and Resident Advisor, home of the internet’s most notoriously difficult-to-please listeners, are met with universal acclaim. Backing him up will be some of Cardiff’s diggers par excellence – Double C of Hully Gully will be laying down funky stuff aplenty, and there’s a back-to-back set from Jack Siddell and Groove Theory’s own Tom Bateman to look forward to as well.
