Unity @ Undertone, Cardiff
Sat 26 Aug
Techno, house and the hinterland ‘twixt the two is rather well served – some might say on the verge of oversaturation – in the Welsh capital right now, but UNITY has a purpose and ethos slightly different to the rest. Inviting residents and promoters from other similarly minded nights around the south Wales region, this instalment of the event welcomes Clare James [pictured], formerly queen of Backroom and City Bass to the party. A real antidote to some of the slightly more po-faced selectors glowering over their Traktor set-ups, Clare’s sets are a joy to behold. Fancy that – a DJ smiling and having a good time! Joining her is Dale Rankmore, who recently took his Su Casa party up to north Wales at an ambitious festival at Surf Snowdonia Adventure Parc.
Rounding off the line-up are UNITY residents Jon Williams, Oliver Harvey and Sean Andrews. No superstars (but plenty of talent) on the line-up means cheap entry, and the best news is that if you’re a student sticking about for the summer – or indeed back home until September – you’re eligible for £2 off the price of entry, and that’s not to be sniffed at in these times of economic turbulence and high inflation. Undertone really comes into its own when it’s a dark-and-dirty 4/4 context, so if the summer drought of big juicy lineups is leaving you with a mighty thirst, this should be a real quencher.
