Today marks the start of a visionary creative project for Wales’ capital city. Cityscrapers: Cardiff Chimera will see more than 60 of the world’s most imaginative artists, designers, architects and engineers working together in an intensive two week studio in Cardiff. The brief: investigate and respond to the relationships and future inhabitation of Cardiff, considering issues of global warming, population growth, natural disaster and changing economy in the year 2020 and beyond.
During the project, participants will talk to a variety of local organisations, artists and architects, and the studio will culminate on Thursday 9 April with an installation of films representing the readings, responses and solutions shaped through their investigations. The installation will then tour throughout participating countries within East Asia throughout 2009.
Catherine Ince, acting Co-Director of the British Council’s Design and Architecture Department, said: “The Cityscapers Studios present an exciting opportunity for young artists, designers, and architects from around the world to come together and hone their thinking about some of the biggest issues of today: city living, urban planning and development, the challenge of climate change and the future neighbourhoods in which we will all live. The final Cityscapers film installation – Cardiff’s own Chimera – will reveal that the possibilities are endless…’
