CHRYSTABELL & DAVID LYNCH
Cellophane Memories (Sacred Bones)
With shared backgrounds in acting, directing, writing and music, David Lynch and Chrysta Bell Zucht – professionally known as Chrystabell – are both huge overachievers. You’ll likely be more familiar with the former than the latter, granted, not least through Lynch casting Zucht in the third season of Twin Peaks, but they’re also an established musical twosome, with Cellophane Memories their third album together.
It’s suitably dreamy, with droning synthesisers and stuttering, tremolo-saturated guitars adding fluffy and spacious textures as a backdrop to Chrystabell’s murmuring and breathy vocals. I’d be remiss not to give a tip of the hat to the late Angelo Badalamenti, whose soundtrack work on Twin Peaks has left its stamp on this collection.
These songs exist in a liminal space between wakefulness and sleep, with the origin of the record coming from a vision Lynch experienced on a nighttime walk through a forest. If you ever wondered what Stars Of The Lid would sound like with a vocalist, then this should really pique your interest.
