Craft in the Bay, Cardiff
Until Sun 7 Jan
The Makers Guild in Wales is renowned for supporting and championing contemporary Welsh craft and nowhere is this more apparent than in their latest exhibition, Christmas with a Twist. As the title suggests, this is not the usual Christmas extravaganza but rather a more muted, if not equally exciting, take on the festive season. This exhibition celebrates the quirky and different in colour and style but also showcases age-old techniques being utilised for the modern world. The collection brings together a host of Welsh artists; Margo Schmidt, whose experimentation with ceramics creates raw yet functional pieces; Lynda Shell, whose contrasting use of textiles and textures brings beauty and practicality together; Verity Pulford, who combines delicate and intricate elements of nature in her careful and precise glasswork designs. Located only a short walk away from Cardiff Bay, this is the perfect place to escape the hubbub of traditional Christmas markets and stalls whilst exploring the best talent and craftsmanship that Wales has to offer. The usually spare space is transformed into something magical. The crafts often include elements of the natural world and represent a stripped-back and in many ways more traditional way to celebrate the festive season – with pieces that have been made with attention, love and care: a simpler way to give and receive.
