Following a 20-year absence, New Zealand cult-legends The Chills find their way back to our shores. The return of one of New Zealand’s most respected exports sees a tour bursting with chiming, melodic rock and a whole host of playful punk – all in support of their new album; the first full length showing for two decades.
The band, led by singer-songwriter Martin Phillips, started out in 1980, and the outfit has seen its fair share of members come and go – only Phillips has remained at its centre. At the height of their success, John Peel invited then to record a number of BBC sessions, compiled on an album in late 2015.
Some serious chart success back home and a worldwide fanbase saw 1990’s Submarine Bells gain critical acclaim. Soft Bomb hit the waves in ‘92, and as they toured the States, the rockers went their separate ways. It wasn’t until some years later that their next album Sunburnt dropped with a new line-up of personnel. The late 90s and early 2000s saw The Chills return to the live scene with new tunes in tow, they subsequently released mini-album Stand By in 2004.
New offering Silver Bullets was released in October 2015, and this supporting tour stops off in Cardiff. Expect to hear a tidal wave of dark-edged songs, and a haunting depth to their quirky exterior.
