Oriel Myrddin, Carmarthen
Tue 15 Jan-Sat 23 Mar
A collaboration between Oriel Myrddin in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire’s Fresh West design practice, The Building Project is an exhibition aiming to involve members of the public with miniaturized settlement making, inviting debate, play and experimentation. Participants will learn how to make their own miniature settlement at workstations positioned around the Gallery. The process uses simple fabrication of miniature plaster houses, growing into a model settlement over the course of the exhibition.
The simple need for shelter has been molded by the social situations that we find ourselves in, allowing us to become distanced from the environments in which we live. This exhibition aims to bring back each individual’s diverse creativity when re-interpreting material properties and their meanings. No rural or urban limits on this construction allow imaginations to run free, with creativity and resourcefulness taking charge.
Oriel Myrddin is a fine place to host such an exhibition, located in a listed Victorian building. As housing still remains an issue, there’s arguably a place for collaborative bottom-up planning committees, with citizens deciding what kinds of places they want to live in, and whilst this exhibition is hardly likely to kickstart such a revolution overnight, it does sound like an interesting experiment in collaborative creativity.
