Food **** Atmosphere ****
Polish food has often been unfairly overlooked in the UK, which is, well… your loss, guys. More for us Slavs. Full of hearty stews, meats and winter vegetables, it’s perfect for cold winter nights. Bread And Salt, which has just moved to a bigger venue in Canton having outgrown its success in smaller premises just off Newport Road, is a superb flag-flyer for Polish food.
On our visit, we opted to share a soup of the day (tomato with rice), whilst I chose goulash and my partner chose cabbage and mushroom pierogi, and a cheesecake to finish. Menu prices were varied, but affordable – vegetarian meals are about £7-£9, whilst meatier mains went from £12-£16. The soup was exquisite – I’ve never had rice in a soup and it works brilliantly. The dumplings were rich and filling – you could sense the pastry was that smidgen thicker than you might expect, but that made it all the tastier. The goulash made use of beetroot, expertly-cooked potatoes and cucumber with sour cream as sides, all of which worked excellently with the actual goulash – which is just as well, because the meat used in the goulash was a little dry. Still, the cheesecake made up for it.
The one other issue I had was that the menu Anglicised the Polish food names – goulash was listed as ‘beef and chicken stew’, pierogi as ‘dumplings’, and so forth. I do think that enough people know what goulash is, and the description below should be more than enough for those that don’t. Minor nitpicks, though, in an otherwise excellent meal. FEDOR TOT
