After 11 years in the West End, Billy Elliot The Musical will be coming to Wales for a month this summer. The award winning musical will be at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff between the 15th June – 16th July as part of the musical’s UK and Ireland tour. The move from screen to stage has proved to be a massive hit for the production as the musical has become increasingly popular and has received global success, with over 80 awards under its belt.
It’s 1984 in County Durham and the coal miner strikes are just beginning. Billy finds that he has a passion for ballet and begins to learn to dance in hope of auditioning and being accepted into the Royal Ballet School in London. Get ready for brilliant dance routines, historical moments, community struggles and family bonds that will transport you back to the miner strikes and immerse you into Billy’s story. It is extremely true to the original film which makes it a definite watch for fans of the film as well as people who haven’t seen either production. An added part to the stage production is the character and concentration on Billy’s mother which isn’t present in the film. There are scenes featuring Billy speaking and singing with his deceased mother which make up two of the musical numbers and presents Billy with a theme for his audition dance.

Elton John had a hand in the music, composing the score for the stage adaption along with Lee Hall’s book and lyrics. Having written the screenplay for the film starring Jamie Bell and Julie Walters, Hall helped create the musical into the success it is today. It is a fun family musical with an amazing ensemble cast full of actors and dancers. Four boys play the role of Billy with Annette McLaughlin, Martin Walsh, Scott Garnham and Andrea Miller playing the acting supporting roles for Mrs Wilkinson, Billy’s dad, Billy’s brother Tony and Billy’s grandmother respectively.
Billy Elliot The Musical promises to give the audience a fun filled night full of dance and song. Amazingly performed by the strong cast and the powerful story it presents, the performance will have you wanting to sing and dance along, laugh and maybe even cry.
