Newport’s annual Big Splash is the largest free outdoor arts festival in Wales, featuring live music, street theatre, dance performances, workshops, crafts, and activities for all the family.
Drawing thousands to the city, the Big Splash festival transforms Newport city centre into a vibrant hub of creativity and celebration. Returning this summer on Sat 20 and Sun 21 July, the two-day event is the perfect family experience, recommended for all ages and is completely free of charge. Described as “a slice of Covent Garden in Newport”, it’s the ultimate kickstart to the summer holidays!
Last year’s festival was a huge burst of colour and energy on the streets of Newport, showcasing the very best of street theatre, with attendees providing compelling testimony to the festival’s ability to unite communities: “A festival full of joy and inspiration! The highlight of the Newport calendar, the city came alive.”
And 2024 promises to be even more spectacular: with the premiere of Ballet Cymru’s Daydreams And Jellybeans, Tiny Circus, Bards On The Bus, live music performances, Xtreme Gaming, Rajasthan Heritage Brass Band and more, there is something for everyone.
But the excitement doesn’t end there – streets will be bustling with the dynamic displays of “BOMBA! AIRWAYS”, as they fly around the city in synchronised formation, leaving trails of colourful smoke and a pumping soundtrack in their wake. Join Dripping Tap for a side-splitting show about a boisterous mountaineer in Webster & Jones, and prepare for the rollicking antics of HMS Stormys, a circus cabaret that promises nonstop fun – both shows are bilingual and performed in Welsh.
Big Splash is set to be an unforgettable experience for all, and the perfect day out for family and friends to watch, laugh, take part and be immersed in the arts.
