Manipulating metal is Beate Gegenwart’s main artistic style, however Beate continually pushes her boundaries of talent as she explores different materials, linking them together. The Makers Guild in Wales delight in displaying the exciting challenge Beate has created for herself in her major inter-related artworks; connecting the body, movement, cloth, architectural space and small wearable art.
Living and working in Wales for 37 years, Beate has dedicated these years to supporting the Applied Arts in Wales. Curating and teaching, whilst creating and inspiring, Beate is interested in the ‘in-between’, whether that be distance, borderland or identity. Originally from Germany, but living in Wales, Beate is almost the embodiment of her artwork. Language is also a big feature in her work, following the idea of the ‘translator’ intertwined with the ‘mother tongue’ focusing on her ideas of orientation, home and dwelling, instead of physical location.
Beate has also been working on her great interest in cross-disciplinary ways of working, mixing her thoughts of the ‘in-between’ with the lines and holes of her work, creating energetic movements around and across her artwork. Aiming for ever-increasing levels of intricacy and complexity, Beate allows herself to create the ‘non perfect’, awaiting the unexpected results that come from her work, making every piece different.
