BEABADOOBEE
This Is How Tomorrow Moves (Dirty Hit)
Beabadoobee’s This Is How Tomorrow Moves is a self-assured coming-of-age tale about love and womanhood that continues to document the artist’s experiences. Produced by Rick Rubin at his Shangri-La studio in Malibu, the album flows and takes new turns from the bedroom pop of earlier recordings to vulnerable yet confident pop-rock.
There is something euphoric about This Is How Tomorrow Moves strings and percussion, which often falls into place quite unexpectedly. Take California, which strikes in the beginning and then paces itself in reminisces of a failed love. Ever Seen, on the other hand, reminds of Taylor Swift’s Folklore, which makes sense given that it was written while opening Swift’s Eras Tour last year. Girl Song is the most delicate here, a raw and self-confessing piano ballad revealing struggles with body image, which she notes she is “figuring it out” at her “own pace”. This is How Tomorrow Moves is complex yet easy to listen to, which is a testament to Beabadoobee’s growth as an artist and human being.
