BASTILLE
Give Me The Future (EMI)
Electro-pop maestros Bastille are back with their fourth album, Give Me The Future, which gives us a glimpse into a possible future – and it’s a bright one. Distorted Light Beam sets the tone, with its encouraging refrain of “I can do anything,” and this positive message carries on throughout. Dan Smith’s breathy vocals take centre stage accompanied by music as buoyant and sweet as popping candy.
Many of Give Me The Future’s songs are catchy, anthemic even, but there are some anomalies here. Brave New World is a 27-second musical interlude, strangely placed as the third track, and Promises is a poem by Riz Ahmed. Numbers such as No Bad Days – one of the album’s five singles – have in-your-face bad language, which jars the listener from the dream landscape: yes, there’s a lot of lyrics about sleep and dreaming. We don’t know what the future holds, but Bastille’s vision ought to be a hit on the dancefloor.
