A lyrical, mesmerising exploration of the bond between sisters forms the basis of this translated novel, A Sister’s Story, by Donatella Di Pietrantonio. Delving into the life of the narrator, who despite no clear explanation returns to her hometown of Pescara in Italy following an urgent telephone call, the stories that emerge from the past all combine to provide a backstory with depth. Her relationship with sister Adriana is a complicated one of love, rivalry, betrayal and ultimately hope.

A Sister’s Story features the hallmarks of the translator’s prose from Ann Goldstein, whose previous work includes the English editions of Elena Ferrante’s popular novels. Perhaps it’s unfair to draw comparisons between each unique story – but there is such an art to grasping the right atmosphere in translated works, something captured in this absorbing read.

Di Pietrantonio’s previous novel A Girl Returned relates to the siblings of this book, and though not having read it, I would suggest A Sister’s Story functions perfectly well as a standalone novel. A truly transporting tale, I was immersed in the lives of the characters, while the essence of their experiences in such picturesque locations enhances the narrative.
