Tramshed, Cardiff
Wed 17 May
Twin sisters Catherine and Lizzy Ward Thomas, from rural Hampshire, are stopping off in Cardiff this month with an array of cool country numbers. These two were first turned to this genre after a friend played them The Dixie Chicks at a young age. From then on they began writing together throughout the sixth form. Both talented singers and instrumentalists, their traditional country is topped with stunning close-harmony vocals.
Ward Thomas’ second album Cartwheels made chart history as the first ever British country act to reach number 1 on the chart. It moves away from their debut album, From Where We Stand, touching upon different influences they have grown up with: Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles and KT Tunstall. They have experimented with contemporary pop/rock, and from the name itself, this album contains a cartwheel of sounds and emotions. They succeed by bringing a uniquely British perspective to the genre.
This tour brings on a more mature approach to the basis of their country melodies and spellbinding vocals. Catherine and Lizzy have said that Cartwheels is the most honest they have ever been through their lyrics. When played for the first time in front of a London crowd at the O2 Arena, the fans fell silent; my bet is that it will have the same effect at the Tramshed.
