Le Public Space, Newport
Fri 13 Oct
This month Vic Godard and his band Subway Sect will be bringing their unique blend of punk and traditionalism to Newport’s most exciting new venue, Le Public Space. Formed in 1976 at the advice of Sex Pistols manger Malcolm McLaren, Subway Sect are best known for touring with staple acts of the punk scene such as The Clash and The Buzzcocks. Together with the bands mentioned, they helped define what punk would sound like in the years to come, and also had a notable influence on the indiepop scene which followed.
While they never rose to stardom, as other punk bands of their era did, they attracted a dedicated cult following. At the gig, you can expect the band to tear through the songs that earned them a reputation among the UK Punk Scene, including Johnny Thunders and All The Time In The World. Vic and Subway Sect will be receiving support tonight from Give Me Memphis and Abstract Man.
The venue hosting the event, Le Public Space, aims not just to host music on a regular basis but also to showcase and promote the creative endeavours of the people of Newport. It is a new venue, having opened a month ago following the closure of Le Pub. Receiving the endorsement of an underground punk hero like Vic is a fitting tribute to the venue.
