Vertical Cinema is a monthly film showcase and forum for artists’ to exhibit and discuss their cinematic video work. Using the intimate environment of the Gwdihŵ café in Cardiff, the night is perfect for anybody with an interest in cinema as it not only allows for discussion with other artists and cineastes but it also provides an opportunity to experience more deviant and experimental forms of film-making.
The night is far from elite; both audience and film are consistently diverse with many levels of film-making experience on show. As the creator, Jonathan Thomas, notes: “Works made using an iPhone or webcam are as welcome as those made with a conventional film/video camera”. Previously screened work includes examples of home-movie, stop-motion animation and silent 16mm shorts from local, and as well as international, film-makers.
Vertical Cinema ultimately serves as an apt foundation for a collective consisting of people interested in sharing, learning and expanding their intrigue in cinema. It is a much needed night within Cardiff, bringing together film-goers and film-makers who otherwise may not have such an informal and accessible place to present their ideas and work.
The next Vertical Cinema night will be held on Mon 28 March and is welcoming all submissions and attendance. For more information on the night and previously screened work, click HERE
