National Museum Cardiff
Sat 21 Jan – Sun 23 April
For the first quarter of 2017, the National Museum Cardiff will be displaying a stunning collection of traditional Chinese flower and bird paintings. The tradition of these iconic paintings spans back 600 years, and for the first time ever this stunning collection will be shown in the UK.
This will be the third exhibition in the series co-produced with the Three Gorges Museum, Chongqing. The exercise is aiming to strengthen the cultural connection between Wales and the People’s Republic of China.
Two of the paintings being shown are Phoenix and Peony and Golden Pheasant. These light and delicate paintings show the connection between animals and nature. Using bright reds and fragile pinks and blues, it reflects the cultural China commonly known to be artistic and detailed.
The typical canvases for the traditional Chinese flower and bird paintings, are long pieces of delicate fabric. The historical antiques of these art pieces followed an influential and intellectual development in China’s past. The time of peace and creativity expanded their poetry, paintings, and prose resulting in what is available to us today. The pieces are a fascinating insight into another culture that is commonly misunderstood, and with the blend of fine calligraphy, mixed with poetry and a distinct style, this is a good opportunity to learn about the Chinese arts, which are sure to only become ever more relevant.
