Now The Bass @ secret location, Cardiff
Mon 26 Dec
Now The Bass has been on a welcome addition to Cardiff’s nightlife, ignoring the house-and-techno inundation to do its own thing instead, and often managing to find a way around the lack of diverse clubs – for example, holding garage raves in sports centres. It’s the work of veteran promoter MJ Reed, and after bringing in the brilliant Cardiffian psychedelic techno and acid producer DJ Guy in October, the next night reaches back even further in the past so you can sweat off your Christmas dinner.
Top Buzz first performed at legendary London club Turnmills, before going onto make their break at raves like Amnesia House. Their production career that began a couple of years became identified with the burgeoning ‘jungle techno’ sound that became jungle (they’re even purported to have invented the term). It was a darker twist on breakbeat hardcore, full of rollicking snare drums and fierce bass sounds. After they become one of the iconic hardcore acts of the early 90s, members Jason Kaye and Mikee B both went on to do influential work in the emerging sound of UK garage –Kaye solo and Mikee B as part of Dreem Teem.
The current incarnation of Top Buzz is just Kaye and founder member Mad P. Joining them on the night is a reputable list of Cardiff DJs with their roots in the old school: Dubmatt, Jackal & Hyde, Fav, Paul Lyons, Silk Cut, T Bone and Tyrone Rose.
