Grand Theatre, Swansea
Tues 23 Aug – Sat 27 Aug
Bill Kenwright presents a new production of the classic musical The Sound Of Music, which is making its way to Swansea after rave reviews. It features lavish staging tells the true story of the world-famous singing family, the von Trapps, from their romantic beginnings and search for happiness, to their thrilling escape to freedom in Switzerland from Nazi Austria at the start of WWll. However, it can be a little too much over the top, and if merry singing is something that turns your stomach then it probably isn’t for you.
It’s a stage production that divides peoples’ opinions. The Sound Of Music is great for someone looking for an easy to watch production, but not so much for someone with more of a refined taste in shows. But if you’re looking for a good old sing along with memorable song, then great! It claims to ‘enchant the young and the young at heart.’
With Lucy O’Byrne playing the lead role of Maria, once portrayed by the great Julie Andrews, she certainly has big shoes to fill. Luckily her singing is up to scratch in this rendition singing high octavo songs and such famous songs. The brilliant set also delights as in encapsulates every aspect of the original with a newer fresher appearance. Costumes are a delight and help capture the story of this all singing family.
