An inspired pairing of new and old-school Hollywood comediennes, and written by the woman behind The Heat, Katie Dippold, Snatched should allow Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn to flex their funny bones. Dumped by her boyfriend, Schumer goes on a South American vacation with her mother, Hawn. One is an impetuous dreamer, the other erring on the side of caution. Schumer meets a dubious but hunky flirter Tom Bateman and they find themselves kidnapped, or indeed Snatched, embroiled in a nefarious plot and doing a lot of running and improvisational mother/daughter banter. Life lessons will be learned amongst the swearing, sun tan lotion covering and incompetent fight scenes. It’s been 15 years since Hawn last appeared in the cinema with the underwhelming Banger Sisters, but with Schumer to bounce off, this could provide a late flowering for the woman behind the ace Private Benjamin. Schumer’s trademark controversial shtick, after the success of Trainwreck, is now funnelled into an action comedy template with hopefully uproarious results. Directed by the man behind 50/50 and Christmas improvathon The Night Before, Johnathan Levine, this should have some character behind the comedy too. Snatch it if you can.
