The Globe, Cardiff
Wed 23 Aug
Had there never been a Skatalites, there most likely never would have been ska music, and if your thoughts instantly turn to the bad things done in the name of the genre, then it’s a trip to the re-education camps that’s needed for you, buddy! By ‘re-education camps’ we mean this gig, where this venerable and pioneering Jamaican band will crank out the hits that broke them out of 1960s Kingston and made them kings of a fresh style. Most of the original band have now left this mortal earth, and of the two original Skatalites members still involved, saxophonist Lester Sterling is in his 80s, but fingers crossed that the current lineup can honour those euphorically funky, vibrant rhythms in the classic fashion.
