PHILIP MORGAN: BLACK COFFEE BLUES
Little Man Coffee, Cardiff
Fri 8 July – Fri 5 Aug
Cardiff born, Philip Morgan, does extremely cool illustrations. Cooler still is the fact that he is self-taught; he started drawing at a young age and his part time hobby has turned into a great career working for Urban Outfitters, Coca-Cola and The Big Love Festival. His illustrations are instantly noticeable; he uses bold bright colours, words with too many letters and hands feature heavily in his work to express feelings that sometimes just can’t be said aloud. His latest exhibition Black Coffee Blues focuses on the 21st century phenomenon of how going for coffee has turned into a national obsession.
On his exhibition, Phillip said: “Black Coffee Blues is a series of A4 hand paintings I created from my love of the black stuff. I started working on the paintings earlier in the year after creating sketches of funny ideas that I had relating to people and their love or hate of all things coffee. There are so many coffee shops now swarming every city and town all over the world, and it’s become quite amusing to me how serious people are about how they like to take their coffee. When I had created a handful of paintings I decided to see if there was anyone out there that might be interested in having my work on display inside their coffee shop. Little Man holds regular photography and art exhibitions each month and I thought it was the perfect location to stage the exhibition. I was thrilled when they said yes to having me show my work. As well as having fifteen original paintings on display, I will also have fifteen cross stitch designs of my artwork created by Cat Thomas”
