Dir: Olivier Assayas (15, 105 mins)
An unconventional ghost story that examines spiritual crisis, Assayas’ film reunites him with emo-queen Kristen Stewart after the excellent Clouds of Sils Maria. Stewart plays a personal shopper to a celebrity, travelling from fashion house to fashion house to pick out expensive clothes for her boss to wear. This boring but well paid job allows Stewart to also be a medium. Her twin brother, with whom she shared a weak heart condition, has died and they’d promised each other that whoever went first would send a message from the other side. Ghosts are real and apparently malevolent and soon Stewart receives a signal by text message apparently from beyond which forces her to confront her fears, whilst also going on a fashion spree for her boss in London. Hard to classify and often frustrating, Personal Shopper boasts a convincing performance from Stewart, who is on her own for much of the film, but never fully delivers.
