NORTHERN BALLET: CINDERELLA | THEATRE REVIEW
New Theatre, Cardiff, Tues 8 Apr
Some stories are churned out time and time again; after all, the classics are relatively safe bets. Productions of Romeo and Juliet, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and, of course, Cinderella are guaranteed to get a hefty crowd in, and I for one would always be a member of that crowd.
But Northern Ballet’s version of Cinderella took quite a different path to the traditional productions I have had the pleasure to see in the past. Set in Imperial Russia, David Nixon’s interpretation of this rich fairy-tale was something entirely new; an excitingly fresh adventure, there wasn’t a pumpkin or a fairy godmother in sight.
Taking its audience on a journey through the vibrant Moscow Winter Market, before a dazzling trip to The Crystal Lake, the stage was full of bright circus acts, white fur coats and glistening snow. The atmosphere was electric with the theatre totally absorbed by the colourful and party-like happenings on stage juxtaposed by the pure and calm ice scenes. Most charming of all was Nixon’s poignant focus on the magical aspects of the story (all with a sprinkle of Russian flavour of course!), with the Fairy Godmother character played by a Magician. Even I found myself gobsmacked by the illusions on stage; particularly Cinderella’s enchanting transformation from dowdy servant to sparkling princess.
The upbeat and uplifting score complemented the dancers superbly. Technically, they were all flawless. It says a lot about a company when your eyes aren’t necessarily focused on the leads. Every single performer was mesmerizing to watch.
Once again, Northern Ballet did a sterling job of taking a much loved story and turning it completely on its head. Breathtaking to watch, I look forward to their next visit to the city.
