Craft In The Bay, Cardiff
Sat 13 May – Sun 9 July
Located opposite the Welsh Millennium Centre, the centre prides itself on being the regional heart of Craft and Applied Art in Wales. Craft in the Bay will host an exhibition which combines pieces from five visual artists: Emma Prentice, Michal Iwanowski, Prue Thimbleby, Ticky Lowe, and Claire Cawte. From spending two years working with residents of care homes throughout Wales, they have created an environment in which the residents felt comfortable and encouraged to share their stories and treasured memories. Some of whom had dementia, but as a result of this unique interaction, the artists were able to connect with the elderly and in the process, create pieces of art.
As a direct result of this connection, and through the artists developing their practice, the exhibition reflects the sensitivity and preciousness of the experiences shared through these visits. In doing so, it captures past memories of the people they have met. The collection of works held at the centre is broad, but there’s a running theme throughout them, as they all present the experiences of the elderly. Murmurations aims to appeal to a wider audience and to challenge society’s misconception of growing old.
