Concrete Junglists @ Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff
Fri 16 June
Drum’n’bass and Clwb Ifor Bach are an inseparable Cardiff institution, the walls of the building shaking with the sound of sub-bass and snares since the 1990s. For this instalment of their parties, the Concrete Junglists crew welcome true don Mampi Swift and relative upstart Crissy Criss to the top floor for a mind-melting six-deck set.
Mampi Swift was one of the first d’n’b DJs to employ the fabled ‘double drop’ technique (no, not that sort), where the bass of two tunes kick in at once, for maximum roof-raising effect. He was supposed to hang up his record box in 2012, but decided against it after a fan called Charlie persuaded him otherwise at his final gig. Crissy Criss [pictured], meanwhile, has crammed an awful lot into his short career. Teaching himself to DJ at the age of just nine (his stepdad is jungle original Kenny Ken, who’s also playing in Cardiff this month as luck would have it), he was playing on pirate radio station Kool FM at 11, and had his own show on Radio 1Xtra which ran from 2007 to 2014.
With two major players causing untold mayhem on a sextet of Technics 1210s, one can only sit and ponder, agog, at the sort of chest-rattling naughtiness that’s going to be going down. Support comes from the pool of Concrete Junglists’ highly able residents. Dubplates ahoy.
