MAGDA ARCHER: #GIVEMEEVERYTHINGANDNOTHINGBABY | ART PREVIEW
Until Sun 14 Feb
Magda Archer brings her long winded, space key-deprived show to Chapter and if you like pop art then you’ll love this exhibition. A self proclaimed ‘print queen’, her work bursts with colours and is riddled with humour – if your idea of a joke is someone trying to convince you that the colour red is in fact blue. Her work is rooted with contradictions: take the piece My Life Is Crap, a print of a merry sheep falling down onto a bed of flowers with the words of the pessimistic title surrounding the farm animal. It perfectly sums up Archer’s style, which seems to be a concoction of bold colours, animals and words that contradict the visual emotion of the central subject.
Her new show is focused on the topic of Web 2.0, with Archer claiming, “The internet is the modern day funfair: exciting, attractive, fast and flashy, but disappointing and upsetting too. Your heart can be broken in the time it takes to ride the dodgems. Your self-esteem can be shattered with a stray Facebook comment from a ‘friend’”.
Archer aims to capture the modern social media with her work. One framed print simply reads, “I miss you Elvis ‘n’ I want you to come back”; undoubtedly, some internet users have a preference of shortening the word and, but what is its true meaning? Pop by for an engaging and different exhibition.
