Rebecca Bogue, owner of Port Talbot-based Lunacy Boutique, talks unique selling points, charity fashion shows and being voted one of the best shops in the UK by fashion bible Vogue.
Tell us a little bit about Lunacy
We are a family-run, independent boutique approaching our nine-year anniversary. Our ethos is to provide something different to the customers, something really unique, but also of good quality – a fashionista’s dream really.
Who is Lunacy’s typical customer?
We haven’t got a particular customer in terms of age. Sometimes we’ll have three generations come in and buy off us: grandmother, mother and daughter. I guess our customer is someone who just wants to be different.
Vogue has named you #71 in the best shops outside of London. How do you feel about that?
Me and my sister are over the moon! It’s an amazing recognition, especially from the fashion bible Vogue.
Why do you think Vogue chose Lunacy?
I guess because we love what we do. We are high street accessible in terms of our prices and our customers range from 17 to 70 so we don’t fit under the stereotypes of a typical boutique.
How do you think publicity, like that in Vogue, will help your boutique?
All publicity is good publicity. We were also in Glamour magazine’s October edition under The best 25 UK Shops. We’re just so ecstatic to be getting recognition from our peers.
You’ve got a fashion show on Sunday at the Towers Hotel And Spa, Swansea, can you tell us a little bit about that?
Our fashion show is in aid of Ty Seren which is part of Tomms Care, an autistic charity. We do one show a year, each with a different theme. This year we’ve called the show Elementastic which will showcase beautiful clothes under the sections earth, air, fire and water.
What sort of themes have you done in the past?
Last year was filmology; we had Four Weddings And A Funeral, Kill Bill, Boogie Nights and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory – we handed out chocolates and had cake decorations for makeup.
How did you choose the fashion show outfits?
This year we’re featuring red and black, edgy and rocky looks for fire. Then for water its floatier clothes in blue palettes, whereas earth will be olives, browns, tans and deep greens and for air we’ll be using quite a lot of cream.
What information do we need concerning tickets?
Tickets are on sale in store, over the phone and from online. Tickets are £16 in advance, which includes a £10 Lunacy voucher, and £18 on the door at the Towers Hotel in the Jersey Marina, Swansea.
What does the future hold for Lunacy boutique?
Lunacy’s future is keeping our existing customers happy and loving the stock, obtaining new customers, growing our website and keeping Lunacy’s boutiquey-feel.
