Boundary Art, Cardiff Bay
Until Sat 30 Sept
Boundary Art’s new exhibition places the work of two Western artists, Arnold Lowrey and Alistair Tucker, alongside that of two Eastern artists, Ping Gang Cheng and Yuet Yean Teo. The viewer is invited to open their mind and draw conclusions based around this juxtaposition of East and West. Boundary Art is applying a great sense of poetic contrast to their new exhibition, likening the contrast of elemental powers such as summer and winter, dark and light, to the heritage and ethnic diversity stemming from each artist’s background and techniques.
The output of the Cardiff-based Lowrey; his tranquil, colourful paintings of pretty environments, seem rather vapid and hollow alongside the aim of the exhibition. Tucker’s moody, monochrome style in capturing the transformative effect of the British landscape under weather, by comparison, carries across a greater sense of British identity. The work of Yuet Yean Teo possesses a three-dimensionality to it (having painted on rotating prints and wooden blocks in previous work), focussing on her cross-cultural perspective stemming from her travels. Ping Gang Cheng, who had a solo exhibition with Boundary Art earlier this year, combines traditional Chinese ink painting with an abstract approach. With the Eastern artists seemingly embodying the spirit of the exhibition much more than the Western artists, it waits to be seen how strong this juxtaposition truly is.
