Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff Bay
Wed 16-Sat 26 Aug
Following widespread acclaim, the wildly popular international hit Hairspray comes to the Wales Millennium Centre this August. Thanks to the 2007 film adaptation, many will already be familiar with the story of Tracy Turnblad, the teenage protagonist who’s desperate to follow her dancing dream by auditioning to take part in her favourite television show.
Obsessed with The Corny Collins Show, Tracy spends her days watching the show with her best friend Penny, and hopes to eventually be a part of it. When presented with the opportunity to be on television, Tracy is determined to take part, despite the intentions and objections of others involved.
Set in Baltimore in 1962, the show focuses on Tracy as she struggles to navigate the difficulties of teenage life, including first love and arguments and disagreements with friends and parents, against the backdrop of very real racial tensions.
While the show has been performed many times before, this production, with its quality cast, helps to breathe fresh life into the story, helping the narrative to feel fresh and revitalised. The production features high-energy, light-hearted comedic performances with colourful, bright sets.
Featuring recognisable, feelgood hits including Welcome To The 60s and You Can’t Stop The Beat amongst many more, the show is sure to delight audiences of all ages.
