Platform @ The Scene Club, Swansea
Sat 28 Jan
Another new name to me, but the guys at Platform have proven time and again that they know their shit when it comes to the cool, deep and subtle side of underground house and techno. This is about as far from EDM as you can possible get in the world of club music – and you need to be able to understand the beauty that emerges through repetition if you’re going to last the night. After a stellar year for them, Platform is now the name for house and techno in Swansea (Dogruff, the most similar Swansea promoters, had their last event a few months ago) and they’re kicking off 2017 with a highly-rated Italian DJ who plays constantly all over Europe.
Check his studio mixes online and you’ll hear that del Garda is capable of far more than just manipulating the technical rhythmic hypnosis we call minimal tech – he’s often found drawing for downtempo abstract hip-hop, bumpy 2-step UK garage, jazzy broken house and surreal electro, such as in his mix for Resident Advisor this year. His forté is the utmost depths of house, techno and acid – watch out for rhythmically complex, tonally subtle music of the most underground, unearthed and sumptuous varieties, including stuff by the likes of Chris Gray, Daniel Bell and , of course, Ricardo Villalobos. He’s a DJ’s DJ, and in Italy they seem to call him ‘il mago’ – the wizard. Move over Jeff Mills.
