Ed’s Easy Diner is a simple, uncomplicated American themed restaurant that attempts to capture the essence of a 50s American diner. As the flagship Easy Diner outside of London (where there are already six), I was intrigued to find out how it would fit among the numerous eateries in St David’s shopping centre.
Having scanned the simple menu, which consisted of chicken, hamburger and American hot dog options (plus a couple of token salads), I plumped for the Chilli Cheese combo (£8.95) which included a chilli con carne and American cheese filled burger, plus chips, onion rings and coleslaw. My dining partner opted for Chicken Dippers (£6.75) which came with a Jalapeño jelly and BBQ sauce. The dippers didn’t come in a combo deal and therefore sides were extra. At £2.80 for classic fries, £3.05 for onion rings or £4.35 for bacon and cheese fries, these are an expensive extra cost. In fact, the whole meal is relatively over-priced for what is essentially quite basic grub.
Despite this, I can hardly criticise the quality of the burger which was hearty, filling and flavoursome. The accompanying chilli was particularly tasty and my dining partner enjoyed his basic dippers. Ed’s Diner also delivers a fine selection of shakes, sundaes and waffles – in true American fashion – and the chocolate brownie (£4.15) certainly wasn’t a disappointment.
The food at Ed’s Easy Diner is by no means remarkable; however, it is perfectly filling (and let’s face it, unhealthy) food. Simple and unapologetic in its approach, their attempt at replicating the classic 50s American diner is unavoidably clichéd. I can’t see Ed’s Diner as anything more than a lunchtime pit-stop, or early evening bite to eat for those passing through St David’s shopping centre. GARETH LUDKIN
