The Queens Hall, Narberth
Sat 27 Aug
Pembroke Dock’s Critical Condition unveils a beats-and-rhymes one-off in Pembrokeshire’s central nightspot the Queen’s Hall. The headline act is Bedford’s boom-bap hip-hop duo Filthy Funk, otherwise known as Dotz and Peterz, who are preparing to release a new EP after their Funkin Hell album that came out in March.
They take influence from classic hip-hop with a UK feel reminiscent of Four Owls, with the taut production of Scotland’s CRINK providing a sharp and energetic foundation for the pair’s grime-tinged vocal delivery. Dotz in particular comes with an athletic flow that should be sure to impress west Wales’ young MCs and hip-hop heads – he’s previously been applauded as the UK Jump Off Battle Rap Champion, and he’s won awards for his last couple of albums, with Phili and most recently for his Filthy Funk outing with Peterz. Check the duo’s SB:TV-debuted single Burn ‘Em Up on Youtube for a sample of their rollie-smoking, breathless, bass-kicking style.
Filthy Funk have had a full summer of touring all over the UK, repping their Bedford “ends” at festivals like Nass, so this is quite a coup for Narberth. Support comes from the terrifyingly named E.Coli, along with young scenesters Teej, Ketchum, Decibel Imprint and Late Knight, and it’s a 16-and-over show so keep a look out for West Wales’ young microphone stars freestyling in the smoking area.
