Fiesta Bombarda / Worried About Henry @ Tramshed, Cardiff
Fri 13 Oct
If you’ve ever listened to anything vaguely jungle-indebted, be it drum’n’bass or the new wave of breakbeat-informed house and techno purveyed by Special Request et al, then you probably owe a little bit of gratitude to Congo Natty. Actually, make that a lot of gratitude.
Natty, also known as Rebel MC, was instrumental in the early days of jungle, helping pioneer a sound which would change British music culture forever. There’s renewed interest in jungle – its rough, unruly sound and mid-range crunch is a welcome antidote from some of the Pro Tooled-within-an-inch-of-its-life sonic palette of some of drum’n’bass’ modern purveyeors, while even the house and techno heads have started to sniff curiously around amens.
The Tramshed’s sound system should provide ample oomph for this event, presented by travelling rave troupe Fiesta Bombarda, who’ve been highly active in the city of late. The ‘Shed, a welcome addition to Cardiff’s mix of venues, is a finely appointed space, but its positioning slap-bang between the residential Grangetown and Riverside means that it’s an early-doors rave – a curious experience but not entirely disagreeable. Simply call it a night at the sensible time of midnight or find somewhere else in town to carry the party on. Lovely.
