The Gate Art Centre, Cardiff
Thurs 28 July
Florence Read, an award-winning playwright, will be having her newest play Cold/Warm performed in Cardiff in July. This dark comedy is a one-man play. The man, who lives with a microwave, fights the creeping process of middle-class people taking over the poor area of Heaven’s Gates Estate. The formerly glorious showpiece for the welfare state is now in disrepair and this last remaining council block, with broken heaters and dependent elderly people, is about to be cleared to make way for a new set of luxury apartments with a rooftop pool and stainless steel kitchens. The area goes from housing the poor, to gratifying the rich. Of course all of this means that our man faces eviction from the local council. This play is about that one man’s final stand against this change.
Florence Read has had her work performed both nationally and internationally. Her first one-man play, Blow, was taken to the Edinburgh Fringe 2015, along with her play Twin Primes, which won the award for the OUDS New Writing Festival 2015. Her pieces have been performed all manner of stages, from studios like A Town Called Freedom to public parks like Happy Realms. She’s even had her writing preformed in the large professional theatre Children and Animals. This is a talented writer, and a great chance to see some up and coming theatre.
