PREVIEW: TIM FREEMAN TIME + PLACE
THE COSMIC DISTANCE LADDER
St David’s Hall, Cardiff
Sun 4 Oct – Mon 2 Nov
South Wales has never just been about the Welsh. Romans, Vikings and Normans all once inhabited this historically diverse region, and while most people would forgive you for not considering their former presence in what is now your local Co-Op, Tim Freeman probably wouldn’t. The Canadian-born digital artist, who moved to Cardiff in 1998 and was awarded the title ‘Welsh Artist of the Year’ this May, believes people should think more about the personal and cultural history within landscapes. This is the inspiration behind a series of pastoral scenes fused with synthetic constructions that Freeman is exhibiting at St David’s Hall from Sunday.
This is not all St David’s Hall has to offer however. While Freeman’s work is provincial and historical, the Cosmic Distance Ladder exhibition is universal and futuristic. Albert Einstein once mused that “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious,” a statement that applies as much to art as it does to science and astronomy. This exhibit sees a number of artists address the great physicist’s words through works that explore their own ‘relationships to space’ and challenge scientific boundaries with artistic fervour. An unusual highlight is Constellation Music Station, a band ‘beaming you space-themed songs from planet earth’!
So whether it is Tim Freeman’s awkwardly sincere yet hauntingly beautiful landscapes or Cosmic Distance Ladder’s exploratory exhibit, St David’s Hall has something truly original to offer art lovers this Sunday.
