The Old Solicitors’ Office, Morgan Arcade, Cardiff, Thurs 9-Wed 15 Dec
Words: Charlotte Rees Williams
The freezing weather that winter has already brought us may be getting you down, but don’t let that stop you from visiting project/ten’s brand new exhibition Winter #1 which follows on from the success of Spring #1, Summer #1, and Autumn #1. Situated throughout the unseen and previously unexplored solicitors’ offices in the morgan arcade chambers, this commercial exhibition promises innovation, quality and possibly a new feature to display in your home.
Project/ten prides itself on its ability to give both emerging and distinguished artists a platform to deliver their contemporary artwork and designs; always striving to highlight their welsh connections. Led by Cardiff-born gallerist-curator Cat Gardiner, this project aims to go beyond the boundaries of just an exhibition. Aiming to promote and further the world of art in Cardiff, the aim of the project is: “To be an active and prominent catalyst for emerging culture within local and regional art and design communities and creative institutions”.
So what can you expect to discover at this exhibition? Returning back to the project after displaying his designs in Autumn#1, designer Vladimir Rachev exhibits his creations which aim to “mismatch different objects and weave them into a naive narrative”. Previously having studied at UWIC, Vladimir is now based in London and has attracted the attention of major press, including Wallpaper Magazine, through his quirky innovations. Also not to be missed is the fantastic textile designer Debbie Smyth. Check out her Polar Bear design, which perfectly sums up the winter season.
And what to look out for? Winter #1 introduces artist Molly Rooke, whose artwork is influenced by her experience as a printmaker: “I have found that my interest circulates around the concept of manipulating the viewers understanding of a collection of objects (mainly postcards) through varying degrees of surface alteration” says Rooke about her artwork. So why not venture over to this wonderful exhibition and absorb the original artwork that is offered to you. Remember, all artwork is on sale, so why not treat yourself this Christmas?
