INTO THE ARK | LIVE REVIEW
Tramshed, Cardiff, Sat 21 Oct
Blackwood duo Taylor and Dane, aka Into The Ark, headline Cardiff’s Tramshed after selling out their show at The Globe in June. Their night here forms part of an autumn headlining tour, after recently supporting their mentor on The Voice, Tom Jones, on a string of UK shows.
Support came from Ofelia, a trio of male voices performing both originals and covers, labelling Dancing In The Moonlight as one of their favourite karaoke songs; and KIOL, an Italian acoustic duo who mirrored the sound of Mumford & Sons and impressed with their cover of The Zutons’ Valerie.
Into The Ark’s soulful acoustic sound attracted a generation-spanning audience, although when Come On Eileen played through the PA during a break, the excitement from older fans was clearly heard – in comparison to fangirls who cheered eagerly every time Taylor leant over the stage to get closer to the crowd. Bringing passion, energy and beautiful harmonies, ITA’s personalities shine through – Taylor donning his usual braces and shirt, whilst Dane, hat and hair flick present and correct, supports the vocals with whistles, oohs and some impressive high notes.
Songs are received well by the crowd, such as newly released single Underneath The Sun and No Place Like Home – for which Taylor highlights its relevance given their south Wales roots. A trip down memory lane comes with stripped-back acoustic performances, Taylor shushing the crowd and encouraging lighters for No Talking. The crowd respond with the modern equivalent of phone lights, of course. Covers of Drake’s Hold On We’re Going Home is bolstered with their own creative spin, while Blondie’s Heart Of Glass is certainly a crowdpleaser.
The duo return to the stage for a short encore: the upbeat Brightest Creatures sparks recognition and appreciation from the audience, and with that, Into The Ark leave Tramshed with a promise to return with new material very soon.
