Cardiff’s Mardi Gras festival returns with the aim of changing attitudes of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans communities in the region. With main events taking place in Coopers Field on the Saturday, it attracts 40,000 people, and a big helping of fun, to the city. Wed 1-Sat 4 Sept, Free. Info: www.cardiffmardigras.co.uk

Pontypool Jazz Festival returns for its 10th Anniversary at the Active Living Centre. Hosting an eclectic line-up of Welsh jazz acts, the festival has something for everyone. Fri 3-Sun 5 Sept, tickets £5 each day. Info: (01633) 868239

Clwb Ifor Bach hosts an album launch party for Cardiff-based folkster Sweet Baboo, with live performances from the man himself, as well as Truckers of Husk and Ceri Frost. Sat 4 Sep, 7.30-11pm, tickets cost £6 on the door

Fans of Kate Bush have the opportunity to see her works explored through music, film, video and dance in this performance-cum-lecture presented by Deborah Withers at Chapter Arts Centre. Thu 2 Sept, 8pm, tickets: £4-£6.

An experience for all (well, most) of your senses, David-Lloyd presents an instalment of live music, spoken word, film, and art at Cardiff Bay’s Coal Exchange: Sex, Wales & Anarchy. Sat 4 Sept, , £15/£10.

Test your crazy golfing skills with a friend at the Welsh Open Crazy Golf Championship, next to the River Usk, Newport. Open to 50 teams of two players representing local workplaces, the event will probably be as fun to watch as it will be to take part. Crazy! Fri 3-Sun5 Sept, 6-8.30pm, £5 for a pair.

Elvisstolemycar present a tasty evening for fans of hip-hop and rap, with human beat-box extraordinaire (apparently) MC Xander and live MC-ing from Cardiff’s Blaktrix, who released his most recent album as a free download not long back, at The Globe. Thursday 2 Sep, 7.30pm, tickets £8 on the door.

Events from Newport’s The Big Splash continue with a spectacle of stunts and jumps… on jet skis. Take a friend, and maybe a helmet, to Newport’s riverfront (in the water, not the venue). Sat 4 Sept, 2.30 pm and 5pm, free.

Theatre, music, circus, history, street art, children’s workshops, and pyrotechnics. What more could you want from Barry’s Waterfront Festival? A 40-foot whale, you say? Well there’s one of them, too. Sat 4 Sept, 11am-7pm, free.

Cardiff alternative rock band Strange News From Another Star, fronted by Jimmy Watkins now also of Future of the Left, play their first live Cardiff show in some time at Chapter Arts Centre. Fri 5 Sep, 8-11pm, tickets: £5.
